TreeWalk Site Styles

We've got style! This page offers a JavaScript Style Switcher so that you can easily surf the site using one of our Alternate Style Sheets. JavaScript is required for these "Session-only" choices, which maintains your style preference for the remainder of your visit. Your style selection may be lost as soon as you close the browser, which means you will need to re-set your preference the next time you visit. Simply come to this page from the "Switch Styles!" link in the left menu (it's placed immediately after our site search function on most of the site's main pages). If you don't allow JavaScript, you can view screenshots or possible alternatives below. Also, some third-party software or settings may disrupt our multiple styles. Please review Style Switching Problems below for some possible solutions.

 Click to choose a Style...

Browser Compatibility: Opera users and Geckophiles (users of browsers based on the Gecko Runtime Environment like Netscape, Mozilla or Firefox) need only to access the "View" menu to see our alternative styles. The JavaScript should work equally as well for most modern browsers too, when installed and enabled for sites you trust.

What the scripting does: Browsers may need to cache any new images as you move around the site, so you might notice that uncached pages will show the default style until all page components are loaded. The JavaScript "remembers" your style selection, and if no such preference is detected by the script the Default Style Sheet will be only be used. If JavaScript is disabled for your browser you will only receive a notice in place of the "Available Styles" menu above. Of course, this does not restrict you from safely accessing "Style" options that are included within most modern browsers!

Currently, the cookie function createCookie("style", title, 0); is set to zero which only maintains a preferred style for the duration of this visit, so that's why you may not see a cookie file in your cache. If the zero value was set to one, then the JavaScript routine would create a cookie in your cache that would last for 1 day, thereby saving your preference for 24 hours. A notice will always be placed here if any adjustments are made to this code. We will never attempt to acquire any personally identifiable information about you, as is further explained and detailed on our site's Privacy Policy page.

Changes: January, 2010. Read below about some minor improvements for the Tips and Tweaks area of the site, which uses the "Original" style. "Cookies" remain unneeded!

Why JavaScript? Well, we'd like to leave the choices up to you, rather than implementing another scripting language to "force" this functionality.

Style Switching Problems

BitDefender Online Scanner: If you have installed "BitDefender Online Scanner v8" you will not be able to use the alternate style sheets. "BitDefender Online Scanner v8" can be removed directly from the browser. If you wish to do so, or if you have any problems with another version, please review their Support at the BitDefender website.

Firefox and NoScript: You will need to allow scripts for the TreeWalk site to use the style switcher with Firefox and NoScript (or any other script-blocking browser software that allows you to easily opt-in for selective sites).

Other script-blocking software: Many security-related programs may block scripting by default. Please check their own documentation if you wish to unblock or whitelist the safe, benign style-switcher scripting that this site provides.

The Styles

(Click image links at left to open full screenshots in a new window or tab. Images may not display correctly if browser re-sizing is enabled [screenshots are 1280 pixels x 800 pixels].)

Dialup

(Default.) This style is simply designed to give all visitors an acceptable loading time and is the style you're viewing now if you haven't yet selected another. This layout features small, 1 or 2 pixel wide background graphics which are repeated to cover as much screen (with as small an image) as possible.
Medium

"Medium" is a bit more graphic intense, and pages may require a little more time to load for some visitors.
Cable

"Cable" is the most graphical style, and may not be acceptable for some visitors due to the time required for loading the pages.
Text

The "Text" style delivers only pure text, and graphics normally included with subject content are replaced by links to view those graphics. This style uses system font preferences and exceeds the suggested color contrast and brightness requirements as set out by the algorithms defined by the W3C.
Original

The "Original" style is an adaptation of the first Tweaks and Repairs section of the site and is only available for browsers that have the ability to show Alternate Styles (it was re-adapted as a tribute to the originator of the "Tip Quarry" pages, Ted Quantrill). It uses a rather large Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), so that's why it's not included in our "Available Styles" menu here. Note that some browsers will require you to re-select your preferred style choice after using the "Original" style for the Tweaks and Repairs area and you browse to another page on the website.

Updated! January, 2010. With JavaScript enabled for a browsing session on our site, users can now find a simple style-switcher menu near the bottom of all of the "Tips" pages and indices. The script merely writes HTML element "onclick" Event Handlers to select "setActiveStyleSheet" functions and so a short "alternate stylesheet" link has been added to the head section of the site's main pages, still without the requirement for loading the CSS file until visitors access the Tips and Tweaks area. All site navigation links in the "Tip Quarry" will now load the default CSS file when you leave there, but only if you are using the "Original" CSS at the time.
Printing

Our site also employs a stylesheet for printing. We have reserved the option to not allow any graphics to be printed, and may provide downloadable packages for certain pages of our site that require the graphics necessary to further explain any content, where applicable. This stylesheet also works in combination with a selected style if you've chosen one, so you may notice some slight variations in font size and alignments.

Why bother? Well, as the Internet becomes more and more of a diverse arena, so does it's users. The TreeWalk DNS site wants to provide as much diversity and accessibility to all, and one way to help accomplish that goal is to provide valid coding wherever we can.
